this was the type of performance that romney brought last night. bill crystal in "the weekly standard" said, romney comes out of the debate with momentum. can his campaign turn a good debate into a true inflection point in the presidential race? so in your estimation, your guy went up against mitt romney in the primary and debates, how does this mitt romney last night compare to the one that your guy debated against and then how does romney seize on this moment to keep up that momentum in the final days? >> well, first of all, i'm not the least bit surprised mitt romney did as well as he did. he did well in the 20 debates rick santorum went up against him. i would also argue one of the big advantages romney had going into the debate was he did have to debate rick santorum, he did have to debate newt gingrich. it is like having a preseason. and the president didn't have that. i think the other key thing that came out of this is the presidential race for all practical purposes actually started last night. a lot of people just didn't know mitt romney

the mitt romney wasn display last night is the one that his friends and family and a few journalists who have had access to him over the years have seen before. that guy can win this race. the question is, can jesus stain it beyond one night. >> in any number of areas what governor romney has done as he said laid, said last night he laid out the broad principles but now you have gotten specific about the good parts, the carrot if you will and very vague about the stick. >> obama is brilliant in a speech, a peach is different than when you are in an argument and when you are in an argument if you don't bring passion to your argument the other side is generally going to win and what you say almost matters as much as how you say it, and the scary thing about politics is, substance aside, you know, a lot of the journalist whose know the substance on these issues are debating with themselves who was more accurate and who was not. when you listen to the person in the street, the voter, the juror who i speak to, they say i understood romney, i didn't understand obama. i liked romney's style

mitt romney sold something last night that can't be true. all of the independent analysis says it sha-- and i take issue some of your research there. as voters start to dig more into this pitch they're going to realize it's actually too good to be true. >> doug, there's a point to that. mitt romney has said he doesn't want to, for example, raise the rates on capital gains or dividends but analysis, i believe including your own, although i'm not sure it's your own, did say that those rates would have to go up on the wealthy, too, to make this close to working. >> that wasn't my analysis. the point raised by you and others is that there are now plans that conservatives have put together which meet the specifications of mr. romney and don't raise taxes on the middle class. there are plans that the democrats have put together that do raise tax on the middle class. that says this can be done and the issue is what wi be done. on that i would say i don't think the president is in a strong position of pointing fingers. he has been saying he wants to

>> yes, i mean i agree that this was mitt romney's night. he was punchier, crisper, president obama seemed tired. he was convoluted. the feedback i was getting from people viewing from their homes, frankly they were lost during the course of this debate. it strikes me as a really fine line between having a very serious economic policy debate which this certainly was, in which american voters say they wanted and the country certainly needs and making sure that you keep the voters engaged and that you make it comprehensible to voters. and i think again on that front, mitt romney did a better job than barack obama did and he has to go into that second debate stronger. because the consensus is here that he had a weak night. >> rose: al hunt, was this a good debate as debates go? >> i'm not sure how you judge that, charlie. i think it's up to the candidates to make it a good or bad debate and i think romney did a pretty good job and obama did a very poor job. show i guess that makes it a wash. i'm not sure about mike murphy's point about it being

>> you saw the clip you played with mitt romney in colorado, president obama on sunday night in las vegas, both basically what they both said is the media wants this to be a back and forth brawl, we're going to be serious and focus on the issues because they understand that when it comes to undecided voters, tend to be people, not always, politically independent. those kind of people don't like the nastiness, the back and forth. partisans love that. but independents don't like it. the messaging is i'm a serious person, these are serious times, and we need someone who has the ability, capacity, demonstrated record to lead. so i actually think both of them will be kind of the serious and sober politician as opposed to you showed the clip of scott brown and elizabeth warren, i don't think that's what's going to happen tomorrow night. >> mark, we've seen a lot of evidence so far and see more when we go through the numbers tonight in the nbc news "wall street journal" poll the final numbers when they come out how important do you think the 47% comment is? because we've seen a real shift with m
